UNIVERSAL ETCHING GROUND JOOP STOOP.

Liquid Ground is easily applied and removed, and makes heating plates unnecessary. Thanks to its relative transparence, Universal Etching Ground allows the artist to clearly see the work at every stage.
|Hard etching ground applied on an absolute grease free metalplate allows drawings made with a sharp tool on the plate to be engraved very precisely by acids.
Soft ground applied on a grease free metalplate is used to press certain structures such as fabric in the layer in order to engrave the denuded parts subsequently in an acid bath.

Lascaux Acrylic-resist etching (ARE)

The growing awareness of the damage caused to artists' health and the environment by the use of toxic art materials has led intaglio printmakers to search for safer ways of working.
Lascaux, working in collaboration with the printmakers Robert Adam and Carol Robertson, have developed a complete range of safer modern materials which can be used to replace the traditional acid resists.

These reliable new acrylic resists have been carefully designed to provide all the marks associated with traditional materials as well as relating closely to classical working methods. A innovatory vocabulary of painterly marks has also become possible due to the versatility of the new materials.

The resists are water-soluble and are easily applied with artists' brushes and tools. They can be used on copper, brass, zinc, aluminium and mild steel. The prepared etching plates may be new or previously bitten. Lascaux resists can be used in combination with each other and are compatible with photopolymer resists such as Photec.

They dry quickly and become powerful acid resists with the ability to sustain long etches in a range of mordants. After etching they can be easily, economically and safely removed from the plate with Mystrol. The etched plates can be inked up with water-based inks or oil-based inks. Some of the resists can also be used for intaglio collagraph methods.

Lascaux Hard resist
This waxy resist is painted onto the plate in a thin even layer with a soft brush. When this clear layer is dry it may be coloured or drawn into with etching needles, roulettes and steel wool. The waxy character allows the needle to glide through its surface. After drawing the coloured coating (if used) is removed, the plate stopped-out if necessary, then etched. As the hard resist is clear the artist can monitor the etching process accurately.

2 Lascaux Wash resist
This coloured granular resist is painted on the plate and used in conjunction with Lascaux Spray/aquatint to cre-ate unusual etched effects similar to watercolour or tusche washes.

3 Lascaux Stop-out resist
This coloured stop-out is easy and pleasant to paint with and can be drawn into with etching tools when it is dry. It is used to make images on the plate, stop-out lines when step-biting, and to edit or correct plates.

4 Lascaux Plate-Backing resist
This tough scratch-resistant coloured resist is painted onto the back and edges of the plate to prevent any unwanted biting during the etching process.

ETCHING GROUND

ETCHING GROUND LAMOUR'S BLACK SATIN VARNISH
(Charbonnel)

Applied cold, either on the plate with a very supple brush or wheel or poured directly onto a tilted plate. Allows a great deal of time for engraving without the risk of chipping. It dries faster than ultraflex, is harder, and allows finer lines. Composition : bitume de judée, turpentine, petrol, wax. Opaque, glossy, hard.

ULTRAFLEX GROUND

Applied like black satin varnish. Its transparence allows working on the second state. Composition : bitume de judée, turpentine, wax. Translucent, glossy, hard.

BLACK BALL GROUND

DUROZIEZ BLACK FLUID GROUND (Charbonnel)

Applied with a brush in a thin layer, Duroziez black fluid ground can act as a recovering ground for aquatint. It tends to become friable with time, and it is preferable to use it as soon as it is dry. Opaque, shiny, very hard

LIQUID GROUND DRIER

Applied with a brush, cold. Opaque, glossy, hard.

REBITING GROUND

Serves for reworking a plate that has not been sufficiently bitten. It isolates the surface of the plate without penetrating the traces. It is then destined to give, thanks to its nouvelle attaque, more depth to the lines. Dries lightly and remains flexible for a long time. It is applied hot.
Opaque, glossy, flexible. In box of 40gr.

JS alcohol GROUND

Very rapid drying, ground recovering, 85% alcohol. Serves above all to protect the back of the plate.

LAMOUR's BLACK STOP-OUT VARNISH

Applied cold with a brush, Lamour's stop-out is applied on the back and the sides of the plate. Its role is to protect from the acid biting. Highly resistant, it allows a plate already etched for a prolonged storage. It is particularly recommended for aquatint. Opaque, shiny, hard.
